AUSTRALIAN government and private sector institutions will join forces with key allies – the US, UK, Canada and New Zealand – to take part in a global counter-terrorism exercise focused on cyber attack.
Called Cyber Storm II, the exercise is being led by the US Department of Homeland Security and follows a similar global cyber storm event held in early 2006.
The international exercise will involve simulated cyber and physical attacks targeting critical infrastructure, including the water, energy, IT, communications, banking and finance industries.
“Governments that take national security seriously can’t turn a blind eye to the threat of cyber-terrorism,” Attorney-General Robert McClelland said.
“The exercise will be useful in identifying areas in Australia’s national security architecture that may require further development.”
Mr McClelland said, “Cyber Storm II also provides another opportunity for us to work closely with our friends and allies to share information and ideas about how to combat cyber-terrorism.”
Cyber Storm II will run throughout March and involves Australian Government agencies, the South Australian Government, the West Australian Government and over 50 private industry organisations. |
